SME’s regularly make mistakes in their Marketing – not only SME’s but major corporations. These mistakes are costly and what we hope to do in this series is to point out certain things to avoid and show you what to do to put your business on the right path to success. 

Business owners don’t make marketing mistakes deliberately. Sometimes it is simply a lack of knowledge, no experience in marketing or many other factors. From our research, after ten years of working with the SME community and seeing these things ‘in action’, we would say that about 90% of SME’s make serious marketing errors.

We know that 80% of businesses disappear in the first year and the reality is that if an SME doesn’t get their marketing (and selling) right they too will ultimately have that fate.

Many entrepreneurs invent their product and service and because of their ingenuity and initiative the product or service may have huge potential but take this into todays crowded markets without a good marketing plan and that potential will never be reached. Today’s markets are harsh and cruel and give no quarter! In any market you must be ‘market savvy’.

Whether a business fails or succeeds is really down to one thing almost in entirety – how well the business is marketed. Yes, the product or service must deliver but it is marketing that counts the most and the selling that follows it. View marketing as your ammunition and your sales team as the ‘army’.

Many business owners may find it difficult to accept this at the outset of this series but take our word for it – if you follow the path that we outline you will see much greater success.

We take you through the common marketing mistakes which you should avoid and from our advice you will see that marketing effectively will enable you to win in whatever market you operate in.  

In fact, many products and services that really aren’t top of the pile in their markets have survived and thrived purely because of their outstanding marketing. They have performed better than superior products and services. One of the reasons why many, many brilliant inventions fail to materialise (only 1 in 5,000 make it) – is that they have no idea what to do to market the invention successfully. A good product or service is nothing without effective marketing.
